POSITION: Teacher, Special Education – Functional Classroom
LOCATION: District Wide – As Assigned
REPORTS TO: Director of Student Services or Designee
JOB GOAL:
- The special education teacher creates a positive learning environment to facilitate the personal, social, and intellectual development of students. To respond to the individual needs and abilities of students, the special education teacher must work closely with other staff, the administration, and other programs of the school district. The special education teacher is responsible to the building principal.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Qualifications to perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required to be successful:
- Individuals must possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Must have a valid SPED teaching certificate (Severe and Profound) or proof of eligibility.
- Ability to fulfill requirements to be Highly Qualified under ESSA
- General knowledge of special education curriculum and instruction.
- Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must be able to work cooperatively with all members of the staff and communicate effectively with the parents.
- At least one year of field experience (student teaching) or approved internship.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Facilitate the personal, social and intellectual development of students.
- Establish a positive learning environment and respond to the individual needs of students through the IEP.
- Ensure that all activities conform to district guidelines.
- Communicate effectively with parents, members of the school district, and community. 5) React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
- Support the value of an education.
- Support the philosophy and mission of the Casa Grande Elementary School District.
- Plan and implement effective lessons directly related to the goals on the Individual Education Plan (IEP), using time, materials and resources effectively.
- Motivate students through effective communication and evaluative feedback.
- Display a thorough knowledge of curriculum and subject matter.
- Demonstrate awareness of the needs of students and provide for individual differences.
- Set high expectations for student achievement and behavior.
- Demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with others.
- Establish and maintain a positive climate for learning through appropriate classroom management.
- Maintain current curriculum and instructional practices.
- Attend and assist, when necessary, with school events such as musical programs, student recognition ceremonies, and open houses.
- See that district policies are observed during all activities.
- Obtain advance approval of the principal for all activities and expenditures.
- Adhere to all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
- Other duties as assigned by the principal, or other administrative staff.
- Must be able to work in a noisy, active, and busy environment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Must pass Department of Public Safety Fingerprint clearance check.
- Must be United States citizen or have valid work visa at date of hire with the ability to maintain. All changes in visa status must be reported to Human Resources immediately. Photo identification and work visa, (if necessary), will be needed for fingerprint clearance card and I-9 documentation prior to the first day of work.
EVALUATION:
- Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Certified Teachers
REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION:
- Proof of Mumps, Measles and Rubella, (MMR) vaccination.
- A valid government issued identification or current work visa with expiration date.
- Unofficial copies of transcripts will be accepted with applications, official transcripts will be due upon job offer*
* Transcripts issued in a language other than English must be accompanied by a full translation, (word for word) by an acceptable translator. Additionally, each foreign transcript must be evaluated for equivalency to United States accredited coursework by an acceptable agency such as those agencies certified by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services, (NACES). Applications containing foreign transcripts not accompanied by the above required documentation will not be considered.
